Interview with Father Joseph Iannuzzi: A Scholar, Theologian, and Exorcist
On a recent episode of Blue Collar and a Scholar, I interviewed Father Joseph Iannuzzi—a priest who is not only a Catholic theologian but also an exorcist. He worked alongside the pope’s exorcist, the late Father Gabriele Amorth, in over 200 exorcisms.
Father Iannuzzi said something incredibly powerful:
“The only thing that the devil cannot possess is your will.”
What the Devil Can and Cannot Do
No matter how deep the possession or demonic infestation, the devil cannot control your will without your consent.
He can:
- Infiltrate your mind with disturbing thoughts
- Corrupt your memory with painful recollections
- Possess your body and make it act against your desires
But he cannot dominate your will unless you allow it.
Biblical Defense: Resist the Devil and He Will Flee
That’s why the Bible tells us:
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
True possession is very rare. What’s more common are:
- Oppressive, fear-inducing thoughts
- Anxiety and depression triggered by painful memories
- Temptations that flood your mind
These attacks are real and happen to everyone—but the solution is clear:
Resist with your will.

Strengthening Your Will: Tools Against the Devil
How do you strengthen your will? According to every exorcist priest I’ve ever interviewed, the devil hates holy water.
Here’s what Father Iannuzzi recommends:
1. Use Holy Water
Bless yourself with holy water regularly. It’s a sacramental that demons despise.
2. Pray the Our Father Daily
The Our Father isn’t just a daily devotion—it’s a prayer of deliverance. The line “deliver us from evil” is a plea to God for protection from demonic forces.
3. Receive the Eucharist
The most powerful defense? Eat the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said in John 6:56:
“If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, I will abide in you, and you will abide in me.”
When you attend daily Mass, you receive the Eucharist—Jesus Himself—and that’s the greatest spiritual weapon we have.
Even If You Can’t Attend Daily Mass…
If you’re like me and you work every day, you might not always be able to attend daily Mass. But there’s still good news.
There are faithful Catholics who do go to daily Mass—and they pray for people like me and you. On my days off, I’ve seen it firsthand. They are the unsung heroes of the Church.

Final Thoughts: Stay Catholic and Resist the Devil
So here’s the message:
- The devil may oppress your mind and body…
- But he cannot take your will without your permission.
- Resist him, and he will flee.
God bless you.
Stay Catholic.
And never stop resisting.
