Prayer for Islam Is Protected?
A Christian preacher could be arrested in the UK for publicly preaching and insulting Islam.
On the contrary, people in Dearborn, Michigan, have complained about the loud call to prayer coming from mosques via loudspeakers, even early in the morning, while city officials debate whether the act of calling for prayers is religious freedom or a noise violation.
Such inequality should raise alarm for those who believe that people are equally treated by the laws of the land.
This is not about restricting the religious freedom of Muslims in any way. It is obvious that they need to exercise their religious freedoms. Christians do the same thing. So do Jews. All peaceful groups should freely exercise their religion.
However, the problem arises when one religion is given preferential treatment regarding preaching in public places.
Such discrimination is not tolerance.
It is a double standard.
Pastor Arrested While Publicly Preaching Christianity
Pastor Steve Maile, 66, was arrested while publicly preaching Christianity in Watford, UK, in April 2026. As per the report provided by Christian Concern, Pastor Steve Maile was arrested while publicly preaching and singing in a public place. He criticized violent aspects of Islamic history and encouraged Muslims to embrace Christ. For this reason, he was arrested because the police believed that he committed hate and public order offenses.
According to Fox News, the pastor spent 12 hours in custody after he was charged with an assault allegation. This accusation was eventually dropped; however, he is still suspected of committing an offense related to public order.
One may wonder why such actions are taken.
The Christian preacher did not commit any violent act. There was no threat to anyone. He publicly preached his faith and criticized another religion. In a free society, this must be considered a lawful act.
Such a discussion may upset someone. People may become angry. However, it is not a crime to discuss religions. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and every other religion make truth claims. Without challenging them, free speech becomes a dead letter.
There were more cases of persecution of preachers in recent months.
According to ADF International, Pastor Dia Moodley was arrested in Bristol as he criticized Islam and transgender ideology while preaching. ADF International also mentions that the police questioned why this preacher publicly preached where there were Muslims.
It is a scary question.
When a Christian loses his or her right to preach simply because of the presence of Muslims in this area, it is not free speech anymore. A street becomes a sacred place for the Muslim religion, and nobody can criticize it.
This is how unofficial blasphemy is introduced to the Western world.
Muslim Call to Prayer in Dearborn
Let us now consider the example of Dearborn, Michigan.
As per CBS Detroit, there were complaints about a mosque broadcasting the call to prayer in the neighborhood. A resident told CBS Detroit that mosques in East Dearborn were disturbing the neighbors since 5:30 a.m. and broadcasting prayers even inside people’s houses. As per CBS Detroit, Dearborn Community Center’s prayer schedule takes place five times a day.
Another source, Michigan News Source, reports that the call to prayer in Dearborn is made starting at 5:30 a.m. and takes place five times a day. This website also mentions that it is a controversial case, and the court debates whether it is protected by the First Amendment or not.
It is worth noting that the call to prayer is not just sound. There are religious claims included in it. As Britannica notes, the adhan includes “Allāhu akbar,” which means “God is most great,” and “I witness that Muhammad is God’s messenger.”
Surely, this statement gives Muslims their rights to believe in Muhammad and pray according to their religion. They have every right to gather at the mosque. This is religious freedom.
However, the question is different.
If a mosque broadcasting religious claims is protected by the law, then so should a Christian preacher publicly expressing his opinion. It is possible to argue that the ringing of church bells should be considered the same way.
Thus, either a preacher is allowed to express his opinion about Islam, or he is not. Either a Muslim call to prayer is protected by the law, or it is not. Otherwise, this is not equal liberty of religions.
It is selective tolerance.
Equal Application of Laws Should Be the Rule
It is possible to say that the strongest argument in favor of the discussed case is not an anti-Islam position.
It is about equality.
Either free speech is the rule and everyone is free to express their opinions, or it is not.
Either people may criticize religions, or they may not.
Either people may openly insult someone else’s beliefs, or they may not.
A Christian claiming that “Jesus is Lord” and “Islam is false” is making a religious claim. A Muslim claiming that “Muhammad is God’s messenger” is doing the same thing.
These are exclusive claims.
These statements may offend someone.
These statements should be treated the same way.
The problem lies in the fact that Western authorities perceive criticism of Islam as a dangerous act while Islamic proclamation is untouchable. Thus, people will be allowed to publicly claim their superiority, but others will not dare to respond because they will be punished.
Such an approach is not pluralism.
It is fear dressed up as tolerance.
Equal Enforcement of Noise Rules Is Necessary
It is also necessary to consider the noise aspect of the cases.
Cities have every right to control noise levels. If a church, mosque, synagogue, bar, protest group, or political campaign is too loud at 5:30 a.m., it should be treated accordingly.
As CBS Detroit mentions, there was a decibel test done in Dearborn that showed violations of city ordinance by the mosques. CBS Detroit mentions that the ordinance forbids the use of loudspeakers between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. if they disturb residential property lines.
It is a correct standard.
It is neither anti-Muslim nor pro-Christian.
It is neutral.
If a church broadcasts a sermon loudly before sunrise, people will complain. If a mosque broadcasts the call to prayer loudly before sunrise, people can complain too. Religious freedom does not mean that neighbors have no right to sleep in their apartments.
Free Speech Cannot Become a Heckler’s Veto
UK cases raise an even scarier issue: the prosecution of preachers for their offensive statements.
It is very dangerous.
The whole concept of free speech lies in the fact that the government cannot arrest people for their words. If there is a threat, it should be prosecuted. If there is harassment of individuals, it should be dealt with. Any call for violence should be punished.
However, if a preacher publicly says that Christianity is true and Islam is false, it is discussion.
Religions have been discussing each other for ages. Christians criticize Islam. Muslims criticize Christianity. Atheists criticize both of them. Free societies allow this.
However, if the government starts treating theological disagreement as “hate,” it becomes a heckler’s veto.
It means that the right to freedom of speech dies.
Choice of the West
The West faces a tough choice today.
It either supports free speech and religious freedom for all.
Or it keeps pretending to protect tolerance while persecuting those who say the right words.
A Christian preacher should not be arrested for publicly claiming that Christianity is true and Islam is false. A Muslim should not be persecuted for saying that Muhammad is God’s messenger. Jews should not be prohibited from speaking about Judaism. Atheists should not be arrested for criticizing religion.
The standard should be equal.
The law should be neutral.
The government should stop treating some religious beliefs as untouchable while others are open to criticism.
Otherwise, such a country arrests people for their beliefs.
