One of the weirdest political battles in DC nowadays takes place regarding the Spirit Airlines bailout, as it has created a split within the GOP, with the president openly willing to offer help while other members of the party see no reason to consider such a deal.
Trump seems open to saving Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier that flies budget-friendly flights at affordable prices on bright yellow aircraft. His logic is pretty simple as Spirit Airlines has planes, slots at airports, and employees whose jobs could be secured if the federal government decided to step in and invest some money.
There are several Republican senators opposed to that idea, who believe that the Spirit Airlines bailout would represent a bad investment, as the government would try to take control of a company which could not attract enough funding from private investors, creditors, and even competitors.
These differences in attitude show that sometimes Trump’s business intuition clashes with the party’s concerns related to federal ownership.
Trump Is Willing To Rescue Spirit Airlines Or At Least Leave the Option Open
President Trump has been open about his willingness to help Spirit Airlines, as he considers it a valuable distressed asset, worth investing in.
During an interview at CNBC, the president claimed that “Spirit’s in trouble” and that “maybe the federal government should help that one out.” According to AP news, Trump was also pointing to about 14,000 jobs when talking about the airline’s financial situation.
Here we see Trump’s logic regarding the Spirit Airlines bailout.
Firstly, it is about the jobs that could be saved if the federal government stepped in and invested in the company. Secondly, Trump’s comments show that he sees Spirit Airlines as a valuable distressed asset that has the potential of turning into profits.
At a White House event, the president also claimed that “Spirit has good aircraft and good assets” and that the government could sell its position once the oil prices dropped, generating a profit for the Treasury.
So, this sounds like a typical Trump strategy of buying at a low price, stabilizing the investment, and selling high when the time is right.
That said, it remains unclear how realistic it is for the government to make some money on the asset.
Spirit Airlines has been going through difficulties since several years ago, as the low-cost carrier had gone bankrupt twice and faced many challenges with aircraft maintenance, fuel prices, financial losses, and mergers that failed.
According to the AP, Spirit Airlines applied for Chapter 11 protection in November 2024, and again in August 2025. The main reason behind the company’s bankruptcy application was the war between the United States and Iran, as the conflict made jet fuel prices soar.
In short, it seems that the federal government could help Spirit Airlines stay afloat, yet the deal could also lead to a loss, with Spirit Airlines becoming yet another taxpayer-owned company due to private investors’ reluctance to invest in the airline’s operations.
This is one of the reasons why Republican senators disagree with the Spirit Airlines bailout.
Republican Senators Oppose The Idea Of Helping Spirit Airlines
A Spirit Airlines bailout has become an issue that caused a division among Republican lawmakers.
According to Reuters, Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas described the idea as “an absolutely terrible idea,” as the government would find it difficult to run a bankrupt budget airline.
As usual, this is a straightforward statement, showing a typical Republican position that companies failing to remain profitable and to generate revenue and profit should not receive government assistance to continue running their operations.
Similar ideas were voiced by Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who argued that if Spirit Airlines was unable to operate profitably after two bankruptcies, its management could not persuade creditors and investors to take care of the company, and it was unlikely the federal government could be more successful.
In short, this is one of the most straightforward arguments against helping a private company whose financial state is questionable.
Private investors and creditors are the first ones to think about investing in a company that has experienced bankruptcy, yet they chose not to. Why should taxpayers agree to spend millions of dollars to keep the carrier in business if creditors are not willing to do it themselves?
Of course, there are several counterarguments, which I will discuss below.
The biggest reason why a Spirit Airlines bailout could be seen as a failure is the history of the company and the lack of options available to Spirit Airlines to stay afloat.
According to Reuters, Spirit Airlines entered advanced negotiations with the federal government regarding financing the restructure of the airline in order to prevent its collapse, which is expected to happen in about a week.
In fact, a bankruptcy judge already received a letter from Spirit’s lawyers stating that government financing would be crucial to make the reorganization possible.
The deal the federal government could agree to looks rather substantial, with Reuters claiming that it could be about $500 million in financing in order to make Spirit Airlines survive and avoid bankruptcy proceedings.
The report also says that Spirit Airlines would get a 90% stake owned by the US government if the deal goes through.
This is one of the most important points that Republican senators will be using when arguing against the Spirit Airlines bailout proposal.
If the government agrees to buy 90% of shares, taxpayers would become owners of the airline and would need to deal with its losses, if there are any. On top of that, Spirit Airlines may never recover its value after it filed for bankruptcy two times before, meaning that taxpayers’ investment could be lost.
Moreover, Spirit Airlines lawyer Marshall Huebner claims that government financing would not only help keep the airline in business but would also result in making Spirit “a fierce competitor” on the airline market.
According to Reuters, Huebner stated that Spirit Airlines’ available capital would be exhausted soon without such an agreement.
Spirit Airlines’ workers union agreed to the deal, supporting it with arguments that Spirit Airlines is necessary for budget-friendly travels and helps regular people fly.
Captain Ryan P. Muller of the Spirit pilots’ union told the Associated Press, “When Spirit enters a market, fares go down.”
This may be true. Indeed, when ultra-low-cost carriers enter the market, they tend to influence ticket prices on competing flights. As far as Spirit Airlines’ operations, they are concentrated in Florida markets of Fort Lauderdale and others.
That is why it could be argued that Spirit Airlines is beneficial for passengers. However, it does not mean that the government should invest in its business.
Other Arguments Against Spirit Airlines’ Rescue
Another issue that may make Spirit Airlines bailout unpopular is related to the stock market. Indeed, the price of Spirit stock skyrocketed after the company announced that the White House considered offering help.
According to Barron’s, Spirit Airlines’ common stock is listed on the OTC Pink Market under the ticker SAVEQ after its bankruptcy. The company stated in a filing that its common stock began trading under SAVEQ in November 19, 2024.
This point is rather interesting, as distressed stocks tend to surge after rumors about a government bailout. However, if the deal eventually results in a bankruptcy, shareholders of common stock may not expect to get any return on investment.
In other words, a Spirit Airlines bailout may look attractive to investors who want to make a quick buck; however, this deal is highly questionable. There is a risk that the stock would plunge after Spirit’s reorganization, leaving taxpayers with the company’s debt.
Spirit’s stock price increased substantially after reports surfaced about the Spirit Airlines bailout.
As reported by Business Insider, Spirit Aviation’s stock soared nearly 400%, jumping from $0.27 to $1.62.
This shows the excitement on the stock market. However, we should remember that once the company files for bankruptcy and emerges from it, its common stock shareholders could be diluted, resulting in heavy losses on paper.
In addition to the previously mentioned reasons for discussing whether a Spirit Airlines bailout is needed, there are several factors that make this topic crucial for politicians today.
AP news reported that Duffy, Trump’s Transportation Secretary, stated that such a deal would be “a terrible example to set,” as other struggling companies would try to negotiate similar deals in order to survive. The same idea was voiced by Republican Senator Cruz.
Indeed, once the federal government decides to help one particular company that could hardly recover, other businesses may request help as well. So, the Spirit Airlines bailout would create a precedent that would be followed in the future, meaning that other airlines could seek help from the government, which could be costly for taxpayers.
At the same time, Spirit Airlines’ role in the US cannot be overstated. This company is an important part of the national aviation system, providing cheap flights between cities. Moreover, airlines play a crucial role in tourism in states and help people commute and travel for vacation.
Spirit Airlines, in particular, offers ultra-low-cost air tickets, forcing major airlines to compete with it and reduce fares on their flights.
Therefore, there is a certain rationale behind Trump’s intentions to save the airline.
Spirit Airlines’ Problems With Republicans
Nevertheless, some Republican senators have legitimate reasons to oppose the Spirit Airlines bailout.
For starters, they may fear that the company would become too dependent on the government’s help to stay in business, as Spirit Airlines has had significant problems with its financial situation for several years. The government could agree to help the company survive for months, yet it could not solve any of the existing problems with fuel costs or aircraft.
Secondly, this deal could make Republicans look bad in the eyes of voters, who may assume that some airlines were favored over others in terms of the government’s willingness to help.
Thirdly, Republican senators may face criticism from the opposition for helping a particular business entity, while other companies were allowed to fail because of bankruptcy.
Finally, some Republican voters could also oppose the Spirit Airlines bailout, as they may think that Spirit Airlines does not deserve help, and its failure is justified because the carrier failed to remain in business.
The Spirit Airlines bailout has become another strange story involving Donald Trump and several Republicans who have disagreed on what should be done in this situation.
Trump sees an opportunity to help a struggling company, yet Republican senators believe that the deal would be a bad example for other struggling companies to follow.
Spirit Airlines bailout is now one of the most intriguing political debates in Washington.
