Steady Job Market in February Reflects Fewer Openings, Low Layoff Rates

Job Market Stayed Mostly the Same in February:

The job market stayed mostly the same in February, according to the Labor Department. There were not a lot of new jobs, but there were not a lot of layoffs either.

There were 7.6 million jobs available—about the same as in January, but almost 900,000 fewer than last year. That means fewer jobs for workers now.

Hiring was also flat. About 5.4 million people were hired in February, the same as in January.

The number of people who quit jobs also did not change. About 3.2 million people quit, a sign that fewer workers feel confident about finding better jobs.

Although the job market slowed, companies are not laying off many people. Layoffs were low at 1.8 million.

A new jobs report with more up-to-date numbers is set to be released on Friday.
